Choosing topics

Updates in Medicine selects research, guidelines, clinical reviews and medical news for their clinical relevance and potential importance to practice. We focus on useful updates rather than trying to cover every publication.

Sources and interpretation

Our articles use original research, guidelines, official statements and other primary documents where available. We identify and cite the sources used, with links to the original publications when available.

We distinguish a source’s findings or recommendations from our explanation of their possible clinical relevance. We aim to describe important limitations, uncertainty and the patients or settings to which the evidence applies. An article should not imply that early findings establish a clinical benefit or that an association proves causation.

Review and dates

Articles are reviewed and approved by the Updates in Medicine editor before publication. They are not independently peer reviewed. We record the original source-publication date separately from the date an article is published on this website, so readers can distinguish when the evidence appeared from when we covered it.

Updates and corrections

Medical evidence and recommendations can change. We may update an article when newer evidence or guidance materially affects its content. If a substantive error is confirmed, we will correct the affected article and add a dated note explaining the correction. Minor spelling or formatting fixes may be made without a separate note.
